South America is one of those markets where technological advancements have erupted in recent years. I mean, literally, the number went up like it was some kind of forest fire.
The number of internet users increased, the infrastructure was improved, and the overall change was enormous. The adoption of technology and the internet has led to several startups in almost every business niche – medical innovation, fintech, ecommerce, and there’s more.
If you, too, are a South American like me and want to casually read about the tech market in the LATAM region, or even if you are an investor who wants to have a look at the current state of the market, you have landed just at the right place. I will be talking about the most noticeable trends in South America in 2025.
If that is something you were looking for, read on to find out such trends.
- E-Commerce
Since everyone is connecting to the internet, their consumption habits are changing. The people who used to visit retail shops for their essentials are now opting for shopping online. And this makes total sense.
How?
It is more convenient and cost-effective. Since shops don’t have to manage a lot of the stuff that has to be managed in retail, which raises the cost, their operational costs are significantly decreased. As for convenience, it is obvious – you can shop from the comfort of your home, and get it delivered without ever needing to step outside.
This trend started in North America and then found its way to South America and the rest of the world. I mean, take my example. I am a South American immigrant who lives in the US, and I have Internet Xfinity de alta velocidad (high-speed Xfinity Internet) at home that offers affordable plans and reliable Xfinity en español customer service.
It’s been a while since I stepped into a grocery shop or a retail store to buy something. The convenience of purchasing stuff is super helpful and saves a lot of time, not just for me, but people who prefer to shop online.
This gave a significant push to the e-commerce sector. That is why in startup funding, a lot of e-commerce brands were funded. Brands like MercadoLibre are dominating e-commerce in South America, and they continue to expand beyond e-commerce as well, like fintech services.
All in all, e-commerce will be huge in no time in LATAM if this trend sustains.
- Fintech
I think it is the impact of e-commerce that Fintech has reached new heights. In any region where e-commerce is dominant, you need reliable payment solutions to keep up with the pace.
So, it is obvious that Fintech will find its way.
Let me explain a bit about Fintech: It is basically a short form of Financial Tech. Fintech includes everything that is in the traditional banking and payment, and financial systems, but gets a twist of technology. Nebanks, digital payments, and wallets, financial services, and stuff like that come under the Fintech.
Enough of defining Fintech, let’s talk about how it is evolving in LATAM.
Funding rounds are a common thing in the startup culture, and do you know which sector has the largest sum of funding? If you guessed Fintech, you were right. For example, Ualá is a Brasil-based neobank that raised $300 million Series E round in Q4 2024. Then, in VC (Venture Capital) funding, fintech startups received more than half of the funding.
So, the trend is pretty significant, and rightly so; if they are to sustain the growth, fintech startups should be succeeding because they are the foundation of further developments in the space of tech and the internet.
- AI and ML
You can see a chain forming: Fintech helps e-commerce, and who helps fintech? It is AI and ML. AI is short for artificial intelligence, and ML is machine learning.
AI and ML are literally the backbone of the tech space, not just in South America but throughout the world. That’s why tons of money are being put into tech startups that work in AI and ML.
In fact, according to the statistics, about 5% of Latin America’s GDP will be contributed by startups in AI and ML. Sometimes will be startups, and some will turn out to be full-fledged organizations in this niche.
But why, you might be wondering. The thing is that AI and ML make our lives easier. Take the example of ChatGPT here. You might have used it already, but those who use it regularly know that it is a super helpful tool. If it weren’t for AI, then this tool wouldn’t have been created.
All in all, AI is here to stay, and it will further grow in the LATAM region.
- Open-Source Technologies
Let me explain open-source technologies before talking about the trends.
Open-source technologies are basically software that really doesn’t have any owner, and they are free to use and develop. For example, Tesla’s Autopilot system is an open-source technology that anyone can use and tweak. It was a strategic move by Tesla that helped them improve the overall autopilot system.
That’s open-source technology.
Now, what I have observed is that the Latin American people are super good at cost savings, and that is why they prefer to use open-source software. And that is exactly why they are great at utilizing and implementing open-source technologies.
Since their adaptability is at a high rate, I think more open-source technologies will be developed just for the LATAM region.
The bottom line is that the evolution in the tech space is going well, specifically in the LATAM region. The outlook looks positive, which is a good thing.
